I am thinking of indigenous land rights from the point of view from Vincent Lingiari.

I believe that the previous owners of the land (the first nation people) should always be given their land back. We have a special connection to the land that no one else can understand. It is like it is a part of us. If it gets taken away it is like losing a part of us. It is amazingly easy for the government to make it so the true owners of the land get it back, so I do not see why the government would try to do that. Even if they do not want to give the entire land away and make it reserve, they should at least give a portion of the land. Although giving back first nation land is becoming a much more common thing in Australia, Which is great. I would never have thought back when we started the strike that it would come to this. It is amazing how far we have come. There is a bit further we can go though, so we cannot stop the change now.

Questions:

  1. In the future all the land will be returned to the landowners.

  2. Why did it take so long for the Australian Government to give the first piece of land back?

I am thinking of indigenous land rights from the point of view from a member of parliament.

I really do want to give all first nation people their land back, but it is ridiculously hard. As we will lose a lot of money, as there could be a big oil farm or something in there and by giving the land away, we will lose all of that. In most cases though we do end up giving the land up. For in the Northern territory 50% of the land has been given back to the original owners. That land cannot be bought so it will forever be in their hands. It is the right thing to do giving the land back, as Australia prides itself on giving everyone an equal chance and treating everyone the same. Most of the public support land rights so we would look bad if we denied any rights. There would be protests and all that kind of stuff. But in conclusion my view is it is a wonderful thing to give back what is truly theirs and if anything, we should do it more.

Questions.

  1. Will Australia's economy struggle if we give all the land back that should be given back?

  2. What do Australians think of Indigenous land rights?

I am thinking from the point of view of an average Australian.

I believe what the government is doing with giving the first nation people their land back is terrific. If anything, I think this should have happened sooner. We have put them through, they deserve it. The indigenous Australians have been underpaid, unfairly treated, killed and other horrible things. The least they should get is their land back, as their people had lived there for thousands of years. I think the government has made a great decision to give land back even though they could lose some money. I am speaking for most Australians when I say I am pleased with what the government has done.
